Our society is overstimulated and under-estimated in intellectualism. We need designers who creatively solve problems, create moments of discovery, and effectively communicate ideas and information. When I was younger, I tip-toed down the line between fine art and commercial art. However, after studying design and advertising, I really enjoyed the challenges and constraints of working within the clients needs. I learned to value conceptually driven work supported by proper art direction over solely aesthetic and arbitrarily technique-driven solutions.
I hope that the work I will be part of someday will be creatively innovative, conceptually stunning, and socially empowering enough to influence and enrich society beyond the commercial impact.
I am a firm believer in the saying, 'It is the business of the future to be dangerous', and the business and future of design are no different. As designers it is our role to be innovative, to be versatile, and most of all to make a lasting impact on others. Through my formal education and experiences I have learned the importance of concept over decoration and the value of skill over technology. I believe that it is the role of a designer to have not only a firm grasp on composition and typography but to also be a skilled artist and photographer. I have learned that good design is as much about the process to an idea as it is about the end product.
To me this trip is a lesson in the present and the future of design culture, and a way to meet the people who are making it dangerous.
